Avipel Bird Repellent Seed Treatment*

Redwing Blackbird, Sandhill Cranes, Pheasant

Avipel® (formerly Avitec) is a product from Arkion® Life Sciences that's designed to protect newly planted seed from birds. The active ingredient is a naturally occurring substance that has been shown to repel birds.

Planting corn seed treated with Avipel® has been shown to greatly reduce damage caused by Sandhill Cranes. It has been successfully used since 2006 under EPA Section 18 emergency use in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan. This year it has also been approved for Section 18 use in Texas to combat crane problems, and in Louisiana and Mississippi to repel blackbirds and grackles. Avipel® also shows promise as an effective deterrent for pheasants.

Arkion® is pleased to introduce a new product designed for use on rice, AV-1011. This spring the FDA has granted the first Section 18 permits to market AV-1011 in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Missouri. When used on rice, AV-1011 is especially effective against blackbirds and grackles. It has proved highly effective in preventing birds from ravaging newly planted fields.

AV-1011 for Rice is available as a liquid, while Avipel® comes in both liquid and dry forms. If you're having problems with crop loss from birds, check to see if Avipel® Seed Treatment products are available in your state.

The Safe, Humane Way to Keep Birds from Destroying Your Crop

The active ingredient in Avipel® is anthraquinone, an organic chemical that occurs naturally in at least 94 known plant species. When birds eat seeds coated with Avipel®, they experience an unpleasant, but harmless, gut reaction which they associate with the location. Birds quickly learn to avoid treated seeds and forage for other seeds and insects instead. Studies done by the International Crane Foundation, USDA and others have shown efficient protection of planted corn seed.
